Diana Krall’s jazz masterpiece amazed the Starlite audience last night

Singer, pianist, and composer Diana Krall captivated the audience once again last night at the Starlite Occident Auditorium, marking her third consecutive performance at the venue. The Canadian artist’s soulful and masterful voice left a lasting impression, taking Marbella’s audience on an unforgettable journey through a rich tapestry of sounds. Krall’s repertoire extends beyond jazz, incorporating elements of soul, classic pop, ragtime, and bossa nova, showcasing her versatile artistry.

A highlight of the evening was her latest studio album, “This Dream of You,” which also lends its name to this summer tour. The album, released in 2020, is a tribute to Krall’s longtime producer, creative partner, and close friend Tommy LiPuma, who passed away in 2017. It features timeless classics like “Singing in the Rain,” Irving Berlin’s “How Deep is the Ocean,” and Bob Dylan’s “This Dream of You,” all reinterpreted with Krall’s signature touch.

Krall also delighted the audience with classics from some of her most iconic albums, including “All for You” (1996), “Love Scenes” (1997), and “When I Look in Your Eyes” (1999). The latter album catapulted her to international fame, breaking records as a female jazz artist: it reached number 56 on the Billboard Top 200, was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys—a recognition rare for jazz since Bobby McFerrin’s “Simple Pleasures” (1989)—and led to an international tour with the legendary Tony Bennett. Krall entered the new millennium as the unrivaled “queen” of the jazz scene.

Over four decades have passed since Diana Krall burst onto the jazz scene. Yet, the Canadian—married to fellow musician Elvis Costello—has not lost an ounce of the sensitivity and warmth with which she engages her audience. Elegant and inviting, Krall transported the Starlite Occident audience to another realm last night.

Starlite Occident has become the premier cultural, social, and business meeting point of the summer season. Last night’s unique experience under the stars was enjoyed by numerous celebrities, including actor Antonio Banderas with Nicole Kimpel, renowned guitarist Vicente Amigo—who performed at the auditorium in a previous festival edition—and Marta Martínez-Bordiú, among others. These fans of the Canadian star watched the concert from the presidential box alongside festival founders and business couple Sandra García-Sanjuán and Ignacio Maluquer.
